As the premier networking and training ground for emerging leaders in Anchorage, the AUL Young Professionals provide a dynamic, multi-ethnic platform for the development of culturally competent leadership for a new generation of emerging leaders.
Guided by the core values of self-reliance, equality and social justice, the AUL Young Professionals are launching a visionary program called "OurTime 2008". This program is a two-pronged and is best described as a youth-based voter registration and political literacy program.
By reaching out to build and strengthen partnerships in our community that leverage our common connections, OurTime 2008" will contribute to the rapidly changing social and political landscape in Anchorage, Alaska by changing the norm of low youth civic & voter engagement.
Broadly speaking, OurTime 2008" will work throughout Anchorage to:
- Empower Anchorage Youth
- Amplify voices from underserved Anchorage neighborhoods
- Spread the Anchorage Urban League message & mission through action
- Build lasting community partnerships
The specific desired outcomes from of OurTime 2008" will include:
- Recruiting & training 100 diverse Anchorage Youth as voter registrars
- Cultivating the leadership potential of these 100 youth (18-35 years) through a Political Literacy Program created by the Hip Hop Association (http://www.hiphopassociation.org/)
- Registering 1,000 new young voters in Anchorage in advance of the 2008 Presidential Elections
- Providing a template for future action by program partners in our community
The effort will culminate on September 26, 2008 with a "Rock the Vote" concert that will be held in the new Dena'ina Center in Anchorage. There, youth will be rewarded and recognized as emerging community leaders.
